Discouraging Fly Posting

Feedback from a Liverpool Councillor in January 2007

In Liverpool we have some sporadic graffiti but also have a high incidence of trade fly-posting which we are going to tackle in 2007 with two special initiatives. Once this is underway, our next target will be the graffiti.

Fly posting is to be allowed on designated sites only and will be done in special frames provided and managed by City Centre Posters Ltd of London. A magazine called "Off The Wall" will be distributed in various centres and will contain details of all local clubs and music venues which young people frequent and where amateur bands perform. Illegal fly-posting will be vigorously prosecuted as and when it appears. More details when the schemes are up and running.

Response from GraffitiHotline

I believe the approach you are taking is right. There is an obvious need for this type of media and providing a controlled outlet should remove the need for illegal posting. Please keep us updated on its progress and the results.

Feedback from Newport Council in September 2006

"About a year ago I passed on a suggestion during a full cabinet meeting that fly posters were marked 'SOLD OUT or CANCELLED. This has been successful in other areas. Legal department agreed this was so."

Response from GraffitiHotline

This approach has worked well throughout the country.

The correct legal wording is the the fly poster has been cancelled as legally the event is still going to happen. By using a much bigger font for the word CANCELLED it looks as though the event has been cancelled.
