Graffiti Education

"Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it"
Marian Wright Edelman

"The good we secure for ourselves is precarious and uncertain until it is secured for all of us and incorporated into our common life"
Jane Addams

Education is vital to effective graffiti prevention. It is key to educate in the schools as well as the community and community leaders about the impact of graffiti vandalism, how it can be prevented, and how everyone can do their part to help.

See and read about what happened when graffiti awareness education was taken into St Nicholas Priory Middle School in Great Yarmouth.

The National Curriculum includes citizenship. As part of this GraffitiHotline.co.uk has put together a lesson plan to help teachers increase the awareness of graffiti vandalism in the community around the school. Schools can also register as Eco-Schools. Follow the link to find out more.

Lesson plan

Citizenship is part of the National Curriculum and aims to provide knowledge and understanding about becoming informed citizens and prepares children to play an active role as citizens.

Adopt an area around the school

Conduct a graffiti survey of the adopted area by describing or photographing the graffiti and it's locations

To find out the graffiti removal policy in your area

Report the graffiti sightings onto the Council

Conduct a second survey to see if the graffiti has been removed

Check the ENCAMS website, who carry out this activity for all Councils

This activity will make pupils look more closely at their environment. It will demonstrate how they themselves are able to make things happen as young citizens.

The Eco-School scheme is rooted in a genuine desire to help children become more effective citizens by encouraging them to take responsibility for the future of their own environment. Pupil involvement is a key part of the Eco-Schools programme. Having pupils engaged in the whole process, including monitoring, action planning and decision-making, leads to genuine ownership of the programme and an increase in their sense of responsibility for the school environment and local area.

The Eco-Schools programme is designed to involve as many people as possible, both inside and outside school, to raise their awareness of environmental and sustainability issues.

Improved environmental surveys in the vicinity of an Eco-School should find that their local area is a better place in which to live due to the caring and responsible attitude promoted by the programme. For example, reduced levels of litter in and around the school, lower volumes of traffic, a greener environment, improved relationships leading to lower levels of antisocial behaviour, such as graffiti, vandalism and excessive noise.
