A
BOROUGH-WIDE crackdown on graffiti taggers
is leaving its mark on the street.
The vandals have been given their marching
orders by residents armed with rapid response
removal kits, in a combined effort to sweep
the menace from neighbourhoods.
The kits, which were given out free |
of
charge to residents' associations, community
groups, housing teams and schools six months
ago, have been billed as a massive success,
with many areas seeing a huge reduction in
the territorial markings.
Some shopkeepers, whose lives were being made
a misery by taggers, were also given the kits. |
In
some cases, the taggers were endangering lives
by spraying equipment such as traffic light
sensors and electrical cables with paint.
Street services area manager Yvonne Mitchell-Owen
said: "Fast removal has definitely reduced
repeat tagging.
"When the perpetrators find their |
tags
quickly removed, they realise they are not
worth repeating and move on.
"Awareness of our clean-up campaign has
encouraged more reporting of graffiti and
contributed to improvements in the street
scene."
